“A Gravely Wicked Thing”
By Gary Bauer
Being pro-life, I reject the killing of every defenseless, innocent human being. So without any hesitation, I condemn the murder of Dr. George Tiller at his church yesterday morning. As you probably know, George Tiller specialized in performing late-term abortions. I agree with the statement of Dr. Robert George:
“Whoever murdered George Tiller has done a gravely wicked thing. …No private individual had the right to execute judgment against him. For the sake of justice and right, the perpetrator of this evil deed must be prosecuted, convicted and punished. …Every human life is precious. George Tiller’s life was precious. We do not teach the wrongness of taking human life by wrongfully taking a human life.”
The suspect is already in custody and will be charged today with first degree murder. However, the hypocrisy at this moment has nothing to do with the pro-life movement, which overwhelmingly condemns the murder of the innocent. The hypocrisy belongs to Big Media and the political Left, which today are beating their chests over the death of George Tiller. Every other day of the year, those same commentators are defending the intentional destruction of one million unborn children a year.
Attorney General Eric Holder ordered federal marshals deployed to protect “appropriate people and facilities [abortionists and their clinics] around the nation.” If President Obama was truly concerned about the taking of innocent life, he might consider sending the marshals to shut down the abortion clinics, which would save those one million lives! But if he did that, he would offend the pro-abortion movement.
The reality is that the political Left created the culture of death in America – where our unborn children are disposed of each year just like Styrofoam cups. Once you create that culture of death that devalues innocent life, and champion the idea that some human beings have no right to life that we are bound to respect, then every life is at greater risk.
