That is the most significant factor in all of this. ([Location 156](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=156)) - When it comes to the bugout, there are some very simple triggers that you can easily remember using the acronym REDOUT. Resources Environment Destination Overwhelming Force Unpreparedness Threat Increases ([Location 164](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=164)) - Resources: There may not be enough resources available in your area, such as gasoline, food, medical help, and water. ([Location 168](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=168)) - Environment: Something like a nuclear meltdown or serious hurricane could create an environment that is dangerous to your health if you stay there. ([Location 169](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=169)) - Destination: While leaving your home for that bugout location might sound like a good move, you need to have an alternative destination. If you and your family bugout without a destination, you could do yourselves more harm than good. ([Location 171](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=171)) - Overwhelming Force: There could come a time when a riot or military or terrorist presence reaches your area and represents a force you cannot withstand. It is time for a strategic retreat. ([Location 172](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=172)) - Unpreparedness: You could face a threat you have not considered and therefore are not adequately prepared to withstand. This can happen to seasoned preppers. Sometimes something just pops up out of nowhere. ([Location 174](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=174)) - Threat Increases: While you might be managing your bug in just fine, the threat outside your home could increase to the point that it is no longer safe. ([Location 176](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=176)) - However, you should not assemble a bug-out bag until you have established a bugout location and route. These two plans will change everything, including how much and what type of equipment you bring as well as how you choose to carry all your preps. ([Location 185](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=185)) - Pump Water Filter: While you might see straw-style filters and like the look of them, you can only use them at a water source. However, a pump filter allows you to fill containers or bladders so you can drink and travel. You will not always be able to find a body of water when you want a drink. ([Location 187](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=187)) - Self Defense: If you are leaving your home because of chaos, it is vital to have a firearm or other means of defending yourself. ([Location 190](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=190)) - Seasonal Clothing: Dressing for the weather is critical. You need to be warm when it is cold and cool when it is hot. Underestimating the elements will put a stop to a bugout, no matter how badly you need to get away. ([Location 191](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=191)) - Rain Gear: When it rains, you have to stay dry. Moisture causes all kinds of problems, from skin damage to hypothermia. ([Location 194](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=194)) - Sunscreen: While not a very cool bugout tool, sunscreen will protect you from discomfort. The sun can be brutal in a bug out situation. ([Location 195](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=195)) - Bug Spray: Mosquitoes, mites, and other bugs can present a world of discomfort, just like the sun. Again, this is not a cool multi-tool, but it is a beneficial one. ([Location 197](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=197)) - Maps: Paper maps are essential when you are on the road and bugging out. You could encounter any number of obstacles. Detours may happen several times, and you might not have the internet to automatically take you to your next detour. ([Location 198](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=198)) - Compass: If you carry a map, you should also carry a compass and know how to use it. ([Location 201](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=201)) - Radios: Communication is fundamental during a bugout. You might have a caravan of cars, or you might get separated into groups on foot. Radios will allow you to keep in contact despite the situation. ([Location 202](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=202)) - Flashlight: You do not get to choose when the bugout takes place. If you did, it would be in spring when the weather is excellent. However, it could happen in the winter or in the dark, and you will need to have light. ([Location 204](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=204)) - The bugout should be your last resort, and you should focus your money, time, and effort on creating a serious survival headquarters in your home. ([Location 206](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=206)) - Remember, this is a lifestyle of preparedness and not a one-time trip to the shops after which you store your purchases in the basement to be forgotten. ([Location 213](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=213)) - In this case, you will want to have a means of getting home if possible. This might require something like the construction of a get home bag (GHB). This bag stays in your car, and its sole purpose is to get you home safely in an emergency. When cars are not allowed on the road or threats have become severe along your route home, this bag should allow you to drive, ride, or walk home. ([Location 233](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=233)) - That is the power of fear. It can make you do things you would not normally consider. ([Location 259](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=259)) - However, your ERP is one of the most important preps you will undertake. Not only does it offer up clear steps for when disaster strikes, but it also gives your family an invaluable tool if you are not around. ([Location 264](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=264)) - To successfully protect yourself and your family, everyone must be able to, to some degree, manage without you. ([Location 268](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=268)) - What Goes Into a First Aid Cache? Any previously purchased first aid kits OTC meds that your family uses and might need Thermometers Electrolyte Powders Rolled Gauze Nitrile Gloves Medical Tape Shears Peroxide Neosporin Rubbing Alcohol A variety of bandages with a focus on 5x9s Israeli Pressure Bandages QuikClot Gauze N95 Masks We also keep an essential oils kit This is the making of a serious survival cache for your home. ([Location 326](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=326)) - Proof and Legality Documentation: Licenses Social Security Information Military Record Birth Certificates for ALL family members Immigration Records Adoptions Records Credit Card Info ([Location 346](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=346)) - Medical Information and Documentation: Immunizations Medical History Prescriptions Insurance Information Insurance Documentation: Insurance Policy Local Agency Office Insurance Cards Home Inventory of Valuables ([Location 349](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=349)) - You could also gather together legal documents like your power of attorney information. A small document safe is the best location for these copies unless you have copies of your emergency response plan. Then you have it all in a one-stop location. I like the safe because you can store things like cash, silver, gold, ammunition, and even a firearm safely, and in the event of an emergency, you can grab it and go! ([Location 352](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=352)) - A simple thumb drive filled with digital copies of these documents is an excellent backup in case something were to happen, and you no longer had access to the hard copies or if you didn't want to turn over an original to someone you didn't trust. The thumb drive can be loaded with survival information, too! You can build a de facto survival thumb drive in an afternoon. ([Location 355](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=355)) - The point of checklists is not about defining what you need but understanding the gaps in what you have. ([Location 361](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=361)) - Just remember that any water you catch or source from local streams, no matter how clean it looks, must be filtered, and it should be boiled for 10 minutes too. ([Location 450](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08XB64HSK&location=450))
