## Highlights
- When Paul spoke of the Cross, he wasn’t speaking of a wooden beam, but rather what Jesus there did, the price that was there paid, and the tremendous all-inclusive Victory that He there purchased with His Own Precious Blood (Eph. 2:13-18). ([Location 148](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=148))
- And when I speak of “Sanctification,” I am speaking of the manner in which we live for God, the way we order our behavior, and how we overcome the world, the flesh, and the Devil, even as this latter phrase was coined by the Early Church Fathers. ([Location 162](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=162))
- THE HOLY SPIRIT ([Location 178](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=178))
- In other words, it is the Cross which gives the Holy Spirit the legal means to do all that He does. ([Location 183](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=183))
- For instance when Paul and Silas were beaten (Acts, Chpt. 16), it was a grossly unlawful act, which could have gotten the Magistrates into ([Location 233](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=233))
- Other types of Jews of that day were called “Hellenists,” who spoke Greek by preference and adopted, more or less, Greek views and civilization. ([Location 337](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=337))
- And yet, Paul could probably be said to be a “Hebraist,” which means that even though he was unabashedly Hebrew, still, at the same time, he was a master of the Hellenistic Greek language. ([Location 339](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=339))
- At the age of five every Jewish boy would begin to study the Bible with his parents at home. At the age of six he would enter into the synagogue to begin formal education. At the age of ten he would begin to study those earlier and simpler developments of the oral law, which were afterwards collected in the Mishna. ([Location 365](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=365))
- At any rate, by the age of thirteen he would, by a sort of “confirmation,” become a “Son of the Commandment.” As well, at the age of thirteen, if he were destined for the position of a Rabbi, he then entered the school of one of the great masters. ([Location 368](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=368))
- “The master among whose pupils the young Saul was enrolled was the famous Rabban Gamaliel, son of Rabban Simeon, and a grandson of Hillel, ‘a doctor of the law had in reputation among all the people.’ There were only seven of the Rabbis to whom the Jews gave the title of Rabban, and three of these were Gamaliels of this family, who each in turn rose to the high distinction of President of the School.”3 ([Location 372](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=372))
- “fence laws.” ([Location 385](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=385))
- In fact, this was the cause, or at least part of the cause, of the great hatred of the Pharisees for Christ. He portrayed the true meaning of the Law, which infuriated them. ([Location 391](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=391))
- The Pharisee party probably began under Ezra, the ambition of which was to master the Text and teachings of the Mosaic Law in every detail. ([Location 401](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=401))
- The Pharisees held the belief that the Babylonian Exile was caused by Israel’s failure to keep the Law, and that its keeping was an individual as well as a national duty. ([Location 405](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=405))
- one might say, was all for this moment. Going back for half a millennia, we see three vast and worldwide events, all designed for the purpose of the spread of the Gospel. They are: ([Location 421](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=421))
- 1. “The Jews of the Dispersion:” ([Location 423](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=423))
- 2. The second great effort by the Holy Spirit involved a pagan by the name of Alexander the Great. ([Location 426](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=426))
- He gave to the civilized world of that day a unity of language, the Greek language, without which it would have been, humanly speaking, impossible for the earliest Preachers to have made known the good tidings in every land which they traversed. ([Location 427](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=427))
- 3. The rise of the Roman Empire on the ashes of the Greek Empire created a political unity which reflected in every direction the doctrines of the New Faith. ([Location 429](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=429))
- Greek, too, became emphatically the language of Christianity, with the entirety of the New Testament originally written in Greek. ([Location 436](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=436))
- When anyone in Jerusalem accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, immediately they were excommunicated from the synagogue. In fact, they were not allowed to attend the services there anymore. As well, if they had children, due to the fact that the schooling for little boys was carried on in the synagogues, such children were not allowed to continue in school (girls did not attend school). ([Location 476](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=476))
- they were immediately evicted. ([Location 480](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=480))
- they were automatically terminated from their jobs. ([Location 481](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=481))
- So, we in the west owe our Salvation, as well as our prosperity and freedom, in totality, in a sense, to the Macedonian Call. ([Location 5901](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=5901))
- Incidentally, his Roman name was “Silvanus,” which may prove that he was, as well, a Roman citizen. ([Location 5960](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=5960))
- (the second missionary journey will have a greater effect on civilization than anything that has ever happened, other than the First Advent of Christ): ([Location 5981](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=5981))
- That day when Paul and Silas left Lystra with Timothy now in their company, who was probably at the time about twenty years old, little did his mother realize how eternal this mission would be. She probably never imagined that Timothy would be spoken of thousands of years in the future, and in strange lands of which she had never even heard, for such is the Power of the Gospel. ([Location 6015](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=6015))
- The Lord gave me this Revelation in three stages: 1. An understanding of the sin nature as it regards Romans, Chapter 6. 2. The solution to the sin nature, which is the Cross of Christ and the Cross of Christ Alone, once again, found in the Sixth Chapter of Romans. 3. The manner and way in which the Holy Spirit works in all of this, found in Romans Chapter 8. ([Location 7359](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=7359))
- there is no evidence in the Old Testament of the Holy Spirit helping them with Sanctification, etc. Whenever the task was completed, the evidence is, the Holy Spirit would withdraw. ([Location 7397](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=7397))
- In fact, all who are baptized with the Holy Spirit speak with other Tongues, with no exceptions. ([Location 7546](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=7546))
- From then on, such a Believer should praise and worship the Lord in Tongues every day of his life. Of course, such is not demanded, but such is most definitely a tremendous blessing. ([Location 7549](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=7549))
- In actuality, Paul was totally opposed to the Pharisees in every fundamental particular of their system. In fact, the Pharisaical spirit is the very opposite of the Christlike Spirit. In Paul’s Epistles to the Romans and the Galatians, he had proven their whole theology, as such, to be false in every capacity. It was the Pharisees more than any others who demanded the Crucifixion of Christ. ([Location 9349](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=9349))
- It has been generally believed that at about the beginning of the year A.D. 64, Paul was tried, acquitted, and liberated, or else set free without a trial. ([Location 11200](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=11200))
- And then, approximately two years later, he was once more arrested, and was, after this second imprisonment, put to death at Rome. In July, A.D. 64, the great persecution against the Christians in Rome and elsewhere broke out. It is obvious that Paul had been released from prison by this time, perhaps only a few weeks earlier, and had that not been the case, he, no doubt, would have been arrested then. So, we have every reason to believe that he was released at the beginning of the year A.D. 64. ([Location 11201](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=11201))
- “I heard the Voice of Jesus say, “‘Come unto Me and rest; “Lay down, you weary one, lay down, “Your head upon My Breast.’ “I came to Jesus as I was, “Weary, and worn, and sad; “I found in Him a resting place, “And He has made me glad.” “I heard the Voice of Jesus say, ([Location 11391](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=11391))
- “‘Behold, I freely give, “The Living Water; thirsty one, “Stoop down, and drink, and live.’ “I came to Jesus, and I drank, “Of that Life-giving Stream; “My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, “And now I live in Him.” “I heard the Voice of Jesus say, “‘I am this dark world’s Light; “Look unto Me, your morn shall rise, “And all your day be bright.’ “I looked to Jesus, and I found, “In Him my Star, my Sun; “And in that Light of life I’ll walk, “Till traveling days are done.” ([Location 11405](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00AB6AS46&location=11405))
