The job is uncertain and the economy isn’t giving it any help. The education so long fought for is funneling into a life far less passionate than it seemed at the start. The marriage is speeding alarmingly in the wrong direction. The kids simply will not stop doing everything they can to kill each other. Life is passing by. This was not the plan, and all the while it looks less and less familiar. Don’t we long for the kind of intimacy that would cheer us on without pandering, that would hold our hand even to the fire if we needed it, that would laugh deeply, cry honestly, and stay true?
