- Father, as I read the books of Samuel, I find my life reflected in these stories. I know you can redeem anyone and you work to protect those who love you. But I also know it would be best to obey your will and follow your ways from the start rather than focusing on my own needs and wants. Lord, I ask that as I read, you would make the significance and relevance of these stories very clear to my heart. Help me to learn that I don’t have to take the hard route by trying to do everything myself. Please teach me to consult you first and forgive me when I do not. It is my desire to follow you with all of my heart. Amen. ([Location 26791](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=26791))
- 6The Spirit of the LORD will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. ([Location 27588](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=27588))

- “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’ 19But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.” ([Location 27606](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=27606))

- After that, God answered prayer in behalf of the land. ([Location 32292](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=32292))
- Prayer: Heavenly Father, raise up among your people political leaders and leaders for your kingdom who, like Paul, will march ahead knowing that the path they must follow will not be easy. God, help me and my fellow Christians to see the big picture. Help us to see that this life isn’t about finding glory for ourselves—it’s about glorifying you. May we always serve you well and bring honor to your holy name. Amen. ([Location 37662](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=37662))

- 24Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering, and the number was not entered in the book of the annals of King David. ([Location 40934](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=40934))
- Note: Why does numbering the men anger The Lord? What does this tell us about numbering our church attendance?
- but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. ([Location 40979](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=40979))
- 6He said to me: ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. 7I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.’ ([Location 41042](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=41042))

- Prayer: Father in heaven, as I reflect on today’s proverb, I commit to living according to it. Though I make my own plans, I know your purposes and plans will prevail. It doesn’t matter who stands to oppose you—they can draw their lines and dream their dreams—but you are sovereign, Lord, and your will be done. I humble myself and submit to you. I love you and invite you to challenge, correct, discipline, comfort and lead me as you direct my path. Amen. - 20Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise. 21Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. ([Location 41361](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=41361))
- God, in his faithfulness, has promised us freedom from the law of sin and death, but we are not to live as we choose. Ultimately our freedom in Christ allows and compels us to live as God has called us to live, in step with his Holy Spirit. - Have you ever felt the need for something permanent and stable in the midst of life’s storms? And yet, so much of what we cling to is uncertain and undependable. The author of Hebrews reminds us that even when we feel overtaken, there is an anchor for the soul. God has given us an unwavering promise that endures even when all else fades. He has promised an incorruptible inheritance in our final redemption, secured by Jesus our high priest. It is in this promise that we may rest our hope and find the unbreakable anchor amid life’s storms. ([Location 68791](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B006L76L4U&location=68791))
