- Biblical prophecy has been consigned to the realm of fables and superstition. But for those whose faith is in Jesus and confidence is in the Scriptures, this should be a time of astounding anticipation concerning the unfolding fulfillment of God’s promises. Yet many today are unaware or confused about the milestones that mark the journey from today’s growing darkness to the light of the coming kingdom. - In And Then the End Will Come, Doug Cobb has taken on the assignment of enlightening people who love God and hope for heaven about the biblical truths concerning that which is unfolding around us today. ([Location 102](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08YFBZX12&location=102))
- Every thoughtful Christian must rise above the demands of each day to ask the overarching question: What should be the ultimate focus of my life, from here to heaven? The next-to-last verse of Revelation—as John quotes the Lord Jesus himself—summarizes the ultimate: “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Rev. 22:20). ([Location 105](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08YFBZX12&location=105))
- Beyond the biblical truths that led to your salvation in Jesus Christ, this may be the most important message for you to understand and engage with for the rest of your lifetime. ([Location 109](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08YFBZX12&location=109))
- By God’s grace, the worldwide church is only a few years away from the finish line of the two-thousand-year Great Commission race. We live in the most momentous time since Jesus walked the earth. ([Location 123](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08YFBZX12&location=123))
- Few understand that Jesus directly linked his second coming to that event, saying in Matthew 24:14, “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” ([Location 125](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08YFBZX12&location=125))
- Here’s the point: I believe Jesus is coming back in my expected lifetime—and probably yours as well. That means we may have the privilege of experiencing some amazing things that believers have been looking forward to for thousands of years. But it also means that the Bible’s admonitions to “live holy and godly lives as [we] look forward to the day of God” (2 Pet. 3:11–12) apply with special importance to us. If we are privileged to see Christ’s return, we want to be ready. ([Location 165](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08YFBZX12&location=165))
- Herbert Lockyear, in his book All the Messianic Prophecies of the Bible, says that the second coming is mentioned 318 times in the New Testament.1 And Alfred Edersheim’s classic book The Life and Time of Jesus the Messiah documents 456 Old Testament passages that were considered messianic prophecies by Jewish scholars prior to the coming of Christ2—some related to the first coming, some to the second, and some to both. - The Jewish rabbis of Jesus’ day had concluded that there were three miracles that only the Messiah would be able to perform: cleansing a Jewish leper, casting out a demon that made its victim mute, and giving sight to a man born blind. - For this reason, some have compared studying prophecy to viewing a mountain range. From a distance the various peaks appear to be part of one range. But as you draw closer you see that they are actually separate peaks, with valleys in between. ([Location 262](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B08YFBZX12&location=262))
