Territorialism occurs when individuals or teams guard their roles, responsibilities, resources, or influence, often to protect perceived ownership, status, or control. Territorialism is more behavioral and rooted in individual **pride** (others can’t do the job; only I can do the job), **insecurity** (I don’t want others to know I am not as competent as they think I am), or **fear** (if others get into my area I will lose control or lose my job).
### Addressing Territorialism In Teams
1. Discover the root causes of individuals struggling with territorialism and clarify roles and responsibilities to reduce insecurity.
2. Build trust between individuals by recognizing unique giftedness and fostering a culture of interdependence and humility.
3. Promote a collaborative mindset through ongoing training that reinforces the organizational value of unity, humility, and interdependence.
4. Address individuals who struggle with pride, insecurity, or fear that leads to territorialism rather than try and correct the problem at the team level.
